We used Foglift's free Technical Audit tool to analyze 28 of the most popular SEO tools, content platforms, and marketing agencies. Each site was scored across 5 categories: SEO, AI Readiness, Performance, Security, and Accessibility.
The results are surprising. Many companies that sell SEO services have significant gaps on their own websites. The average security score was just 50/100. 1 toolscored below 70 on AI Readiness, meaning AI search engines may struggle to cite them.
This also explains why broad SEO suites keep winning generic AI visibility prompts. Ahrefs and Semrush bring enormous keyword, backlink, and prompt databases to the table, but those databases are not the same job as fixing whether a page is extractable, citable, and ready for AI crawlers. Buyers should separate the two questions: which suite owns your SEO research workflow, and which tool tells you exactly how to improve your AI search visibility.
Here's the full ranking, from highest to lowest overall score.

Key Findings
1. Security is the biggest blind spot
The average security score was just 50/100. Over half the tools scored below 50 on security. Missing Content-Security-Policy (CSP) headers was the most common issue, found on 25 out of 28 tools. SpyFu and Seobility scored 0/100 on security with zero security headers.
2. Most SEO tools are AI-ready, but not all
The average AI Readiness Score was 87/100, which is respectable. KeywordTool.io and AIOSEO scored a perfect 100. But 1 tool scored below 70, primarily due to missing structured data or blocking AI crawlers. Seobility actively blocks GPTBot, meaning ChatGPT cannot reference its content through that crawler path.
3. Performance drags down top tools
Script bloat is epidemic. Diggity Marketing loads 107 external scripts. Jasper has 29. SEOPress, a tool that helps others optimize their WordPress sites, scored just 50/100 on performance with 27 external scripts. Only Serpstat (90) and KeywordTool.io (90) scored above 85 on performance.
4. Accessibility is a bright spot
Most tools scored well on accessibility (average 95/100). Ubersuggest, Moz, Semrush, FATJOE, and several others scored a perfect 100. The notable exception: Rank Math at 80/100 with 93% of images missing alt text.
5. Tool sites often leave their own basics unfinished
Companies that sell SEO and website optimization services don't always follow their own advice. Serpstat (an SEO tool) is missing its homepage meta description. AIOSEO (a WordPress SEO plugin) has a security score of 15. Teams focused on building tools often neglect their own marketing site.
What this benchmark says about Semrush and Ahrefs
The right takeaway is not that SEO suites are weak. Ahrefs reports 35 trillion live backlinks, 28.7 billion filtered keywords, and 405 million plus monthly prompts in Brand Radar. Semrush says its AI Visibility Toolkit uses a 239 million plus prompt database across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode, with Prompt Tracking for custom AI-search prompts.
Those are valuable research layers. They help teams understand the market and benchmark competitors. The remaining gap is operational: after you discover that a competitor is cited more often, you still need a page-level Technical Audit, AI Readiness breakdown, crawlability check, citation-source review, and a specific content brief. That is the part this benchmark measures.
For many teams, the practical stack is an SEO suite for keyword, backlink, and market research plus a dedicated AI visibility workflow for prompt monitoring, source tracking, and fix validation. If you ask only which product has the largest database, incumbents win. If you ask which product tells a founder or small team what to fix this week, the criteria change.
Methodology
Each website was scanned using Foglift's public API (GET /api/v1/scan) on March 16, 2026. The Technical Audit analyzes 5 categories:
- SEO (100 pts): Meta tags, headings, structured data, sitemap, robots.txt
- AI Readiness (100 pts): AI crawler access, JSON-LD depth, FAQ presence, entity markup, content structure
- Performance (100 pts): Script count, render-blocking resources, external assets
- Security (100 pts): HSTS, CSP, X-Frame-Options, Referrer-Policy, Permissions-Policy, X-Content-Type-Options
- Accessibility (100 pts): Image alt text, heading hierarchy, ARIA landmarks, contrast, form labels
Overall score is the average of all 5 categories. Scans analyze the homepage only. Results may vary if sites update their configuration.

FAQ
Which SEO tool has the best AI Readiness Score?
KeywordTool.io and AIOSEO both scored a perfect 100 on AI Readiness. Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, and several others scored 90. The key differentiators are structured data implementation and AI crawler access policies.
What is an AI Readiness Score?
An AI Readiness Score measures how well a website is optimized for AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. It checks AI crawler access via robots.txt, structured data depth, FAQ presence, entity markup, and content structure.
Why do many SEO tools have low security scores?
Most SEO tools are missing Content-Security-Policy (CSP) headers, the most common security gap in our benchmark. Many also lack HSTS, Referrer-Policy, and Permissions-Policy. These are simple server configuration changes that most teams haven't prioritized.
Can I audit my own website?
Yes. Foglift offers free Technical Audits at foglift.io. Enter any URL to get scored across SEO, AI Readiness, Performance, Security, and Accessibility. No signup required.
