Track GPTBot and ClaudeBot on WordPress

Install the free Foglift AI Traffic plugin to track GPTBot, ClaudeBot, OAI-SearchBot, and other recognized AI agents that reach WordPress. The same installation records recognized AI answer referral clicks by landing page.

Setup takes one public workspace token. No secret API key is stored or sent. Crawler requests are grouped by purpose, so potential training access, search indexing, and live user-requested fetches remain separate from citations and human referrals.

For recognized AI crawler or referral events only, the Sensor reports the page path, user agent, AI source classification, and event time. It uses no cookies, does not identify visitors, and strips query strings.

Step 1

Download the plugin

Download the signed-off Foglift package, then keep this page open for the four WordPress steps below.

Download WordPress plugin

Version 0.1.0 · ZIP package · Requires WordPress 6.0 and PHP 7.4 or newer

Step 2

Upload and activate it

  1. In WordPress Admin, open Plugins → Add New Plugin.
  2. Select Upload Plugin.
  3. Choose the downloaded ZIP, select Install Now, then activate Foglift AI Traffic.

Step 3

Paste your public workspace token

  1. In Foglift, open AI Traffic → Set up Sensor and copy the public workspace token.
  2. In WordPress, open Settings → Foglift AI Traffic.
  3. Paste the token and save changes. The token identifies your site but cannot access your Foglift account.

Step 4

Account for full-page caching

A page cache can answer a request before WordPress or PHP runs, so those cache-served crawler visits are not visible to this plugin. The plugin also adds the Foglift browser pixel to your site's <head>, which the visitor's browser runs even on a cached page, so recognized AI answer referral clicks are still recorded. Classic crawler requests served from cache stay invisible. When WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, or W3 Total Cache is active, the settings page shows the same limitation.

Add nginx tracking when your host allows it

Step 5

Verify the Sensor install

Return to AI Traffic and choose Verify install. Foglift sends a unique workspace-bound request through your site and confirms when the plugin reports it. If the request is not observed, review the token and cache path, then try again.

Open AI Traffic to Verify install
Browser pixel alternative for referral clicks

The plugin above already injects this pixel for you once your token is saved. If you cannot install the plugin, add the browser pixel by hand with a header snippets plugin or your theme's Appearance → Customize script field. It records recognized AI answer referral clicks but cannot see crawler visits.

Open Plugins → Add New Plugin to install a trusted header snippets tool, or use an existing site-wide Head field.

WordPress FAQ

What the plugin records, and what it does not prove

How do I track GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and OAI-SearchBot traffic on WordPress?

Install the Foglift AI Traffic plugin, paste the public workspace token from AI Traffic, and verify the installation. The plugin records recognized crawler requests that reach WordPress or PHP and groups them by agent, purpose, page, and time.

Which AI agents does the WordPress plugin distinguish?

The plugin distinguishes GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User from ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, and Claude-User, along with other recognized agents. Foglift keeps potential training access, search indexing, and live user-requested fetches separate.

Does an AI crawler visit mean my WordPress page was cited?

No. A crawler request proves that a recognized agent reached WordPress at a recorded time. It does not prove indexing, citation, recommendation, model training, or a human visit. Use prompt-level AI Visibility and recognized AI referrals as separate outcome evidence.

Can a WordPress page cache hide AI crawler visits?

Yes. A full-page cache can respond before WordPress or PHP runs, so the plugin cannot record those cache-served crawler requests. Its browser pixel still records recognized AI answer referral clicks. Add server-level tracking when the host allows it if complete crawler coverage matters.

Can I track AI crawler visits on WordPress for free?

Yes. Foglift Sensor and AI Crawler Analytics are available on the Free plan for one brand. Free also includes unlimited single-page Technical Audits and active-use weekly Perplexity monitoring. Launch starts at $49 per month and adds five-engine monitoring, API, CLI, MCP, and webhooks.
