ChatGPT visibility guide
How a small brand gets recommended by ChatGPT
ChatGPT answers broad questions from memory and searches when a question carries a specific requirement. A small brand wins by owning specific features, then publishing the exact product or documentation page that answers the buyer's question.
The answer
A small brand gets recommended by ChatGPT by targeting specific buyer requirements that trigger web search. Own a feature, integration, price point, or operating constraint. Then publish the product page or documentation that answers that exact question in the buyer's language.
Why specific questions give a small brand an opening
Foglift tested 30 buyer questions twice, once with search off and once with search on. For the 15 broad category questions, 39 of the 48 brands named with search on were already present with search off. That is 81.2%. In tech SaaS, 16 of 17 search-on brands were already in the memory answer.
To calculate the opening for smaller brands, we look at what search added. Broad questions added nine brands across all 15 industries and one in tech SaaS. Specific capability questions added 12 across the same industries. The practical conclusion is plain: memory is the long game. A specific retrieval question is the game you can work on this quarter.
When graphed, the broad-question result looks like this. Read the full search-on versus search-off study for the paired tables, method, and downloadable data.
1. List the questions buyers ask 12:28
Start with the questions that influence a purchase. Map the customer profiles you serve. Pull the first questions buyers ask on sales calls. Ask current customers what they typed before they found a shortlist.
Combine those sources into one list, then rank the questions by search volume and buyer intent. Keep the customer's wording. A cleaned-up marketing phrase can erase the constraint that made the question useful.
2. Run and classify each question 13:30
Run every question through ChatGPT with search available. Inspect the search trace when the interface exposes it. A memory question starts with a search that already names brands. A search question starts by restating the requirement itself.
OpenAI explains that ChatGPT may rewrite one prompt into one or more targeted web queries. That sequence is the query fan-out. The first query tells you whether retrieval is discovering candidates or checking a shortlist the model already formed. See OpenAI's current ChatGPT search documentation.
3. Pick the search questions you can win 14:13
Choose questions where your product verifiably satisfies the named requirement and the first search still describes the requirement. A useful target sounds like “AI search monitoring tool with an API” or “CRM with native WhatsApp integration and two-way contact sync.”
Leave broad “best” questions in the long-term plan. Those answers draw more heavily from memorized category association. You earn that association through repeated independent mentions, customer usage, and time in the training corpus.
4. Publish the exact product answer 14:25
Create a product page or documentation page whose heading and opening answer match the buyer's requirement. State the capability, plan boundary, price, compatibility, setup path, and operating limit. Give the model complete facts it can lift into an answer.
A vague claim such as “powerful AI visibility” gives the model nothing to verify. A sentence such as “Foglift monitors five engines from $49 per month and exposes its data through a REST API, CLI, and MCP” states a specific fit for an API-shaped question.
5. Submit, watch, and measure 15:08
Submit the new URL through IndexNow, confirm that robots.txt allows the OpenAI access you intend, and watch your logs. OpenAI documents three separate user agents: OAI-SearchBot for search, GPTBot for potential model training, and ChatGPT-User for user-requested fetches. Its crawler documentation explains the boundary for each one.
We usually see the crawlers within a few days. For pages tied to a real search question, Foglift and the 200 brands using this process usually see progress in the answer within one to three weeks and one or two page iterations. Treat that as an observed working range. A fetch proves access. The outcome is a brand mention, citation, referral, or search click.
The Foglift case
Foglift was absent from the broad question “best AI search monitoring tool” and fixed the winnable version in the same pass: after publishing exact API documentation, the brand was named every time for “AI search monitoring tool with an API.” The feature gave the question a constraint, and the documentation gave ChatGPT a page that matched it.

Frequently asked questions
Does writing blog posts get you recommended by ChatGPT?
A broad blog post rarely changes a memorized category shortlist this quarter. A product page or documentation page has a clearer job when it answers one specific capability question with exact features, prices, limits, and compatibility details. Broad category recognition still requires repeated independent mentions that can enter future training data.
How long until ChatGPT names a new brand?
For a retrievable search question, Foglift and the brands using this process usually see progress within one to three weeks and one or two page iterations. That is an observed working range, not a guarantee. A crawler fetch is only a diagnostic event, so confirm the result in the answer itself.
What is ChatGPT query fan-out?
Query fan-out is the set of narrower web searches ChatGPT generates from one user question. A broad prompt may produce searches that already contain known brand names. A specific prompt can produce a first search that restates the buyer's requirement, which leaves room for a relevant product or documentation page to enter the source set.
How can I tell whether a question is driven by memory or search?
Run the question with ChatGPT search and inspect the search trace when it is available. If the first search already contains brand names, the shortlist likely came from memory before retrieval. If the first search restates the capability or requirement, classify it as a search question and inspect the pages returned for that requirement.
Which OpenAI crawlers should I watch?
Watch OAI-SearchBot for search discovery, GPTBot for potential model training, and ChatGPT-User for user-requested page fetches. OpenAI documents a separate purpose for each user agent. A visit from any crawler proves access to a page. It does not prove that ChatGPT cited or recommended the page.
Should a small brand target broad 'best' questions?
Treat broad questions as the long game. In Foglift's paired study, 39 of 48 brands named on broad questions with search on were already present with search off. Start with specific requirements your product verifiably owns, then build broader recognition through independent category mentions over time.
