What Is a URL Slug?
A URL slug is the part of a URL that identifies a specific page in a human-readable format. For example, in foglift.io/blog/how-to-check-seo-score, the slug is how-to-check-seo-score.
URL Slug Best Practices for SEO
- Use hyphens, not underscores: Google treats hyphens as word separators but not underscores
- Keep it short: 3-5 words is ideal. Remove stop words (a, the, is, in)
- Include target keyword: Put your primary keyword in the slug
- Use lowercase: URLs are case-sensitive. Lowercase prevents duplicate content
- Avoid special characters: Stick to letters, numbers, and hyphens
- Be descriptive: The slug should hint at the page content
